Abstract: the single-strand conformation polymorphism (sscp) analysis was developed to characterize rna segments of the genome in three strains of virus eastern equine encephalitis (eeev), isolated from dead equine brains. the rna segments were amplified by the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rt-pcr). the analyses of the 542 pb fragment from the 3? untranslated region of the 26s mrna and the 532 pb fragment of the nonstructural p4 protein (nsp4) gene were performed. the results of the present investigation show that the migration of the single strands of the c-dna fragments was different in these isolated viruses, which indicate genetic polymorphism in these genome regions, which is characteristic of eeev strains from south american varieties.
