Abstract: the objective is to study the type of attribution of responsibility with women battered by their partners, and the relationship between the type of attribution with other types of abuse in infancy. the sample includes 134 women attending three mental health centers in whom physical abuse by their partners was detected using specific questionnaires. results: we detected that 37,3% of women though they were mainly responsible; 47.6% though the responsibility was basically their partners and 15.1% though it was a shared responsibility. within the women that blamed themselves, 32.6% believed their character was to blame and 67.4% thought it because of their behavior. women that blamed themselves had the following characteristics: more suicide attempts, greater number of divorces in infancy and a higher frequency of physical abuse in infancy. the only predictive variable with multivariate analysis with logistic regression, was having suffered abuse by the father during infancy. other findings are discussed.
