this article focuses on past and current research on latin american politics. it offers an overview of research agendas in the study of latin american politics over the past four decades, placing an emphasis on the development of a comparative politics of latin america. it also addresses the strategies -families of methods- used in research on latin american politics, and provides an assessment of these research strategies. though the contributions of traditional research methods are recognized, the need to embrace methodological innovation is also stressed. hence, the advancement of knowledge on latin american politics is seen as hinging on research that finds an adequate balance between old and new methods
