Abstract:

the theoretical perspective of the approach to student learning postulates that the understanding of learning should be examined through the experiences of the learner. the way in which a student learns is related to the characteristics and quantity of tasks demanded in each course, with the educational context and with motives, which in turn, influence learning strategies. this study was non-experimental and descriptive with the aim of discovering the approach towards learning of students in the areas of nursing, engineering and sports studies in a public university in mexico. the questionnaire on study processes (r-spq-2f) of biggs, kember and leung (2001) was applied to a sample of 173 students: 49 from nursing, 50 from engineering and 74 from sports studies. the results showed that nursing and engineering achieved higher points in the deeper approach than in the superficial one, but in sports studies there were no significant differences. deep motives obtained higher points than the more superficial ones in all three areas of study. in learning strategies, the highest points were in engineering as far as deeper strategies were concerned whereas superficial strategies were noted in sports studies. there were no significant differences in nursing
