Abstract: objective: evaluate the use of pentoxifylline in patients, with the diagnosis of established necrotizing enterocolitis, to avoid the reperfusion syndrome or progression of the disease. method: prospective study with cross-sectional descriptive analysis of 20 patients, with diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis, stage ii (defined) or (iii) advances. setting: deparment of pediatric. maternity "conception palacios". results: in 90 % of the patients (18 cases) the evolution was satisfactory, all of them survivor and only 2 cases (10%) were death. conclusions: the use of the pentoxifylline, can avoid oxidative stress or reperfusion syndrome, diminishing the morbi-mortality of the patients and with no need to resort to surgery.
