Morbimortalidad fetal y neonatal en embarazo gemelar. Hospital Chiquinquirá de Maracaibo. 1991-2000Keywords: fetal and neonatal morbidity, mortality, twin pregnancy. Abstract: objective: to study fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in twin pregnancy. method: descriptive, transversal and retrospective study of 335 twin pregnancies, between january 1991- december 2000. setting: gynecology and obstetrics department. chiquinquira hospital. maracaibo, venezuela. results: the main fetal and neonatal complications there were low birth weight (52,72%), preterm birth (46,26%), distress respiratory syndrome (22,21%) and intrauterine grown restriction (19,10%). twin birth weigh discordance >10% was found in 49,85%. mortality occurred in 18,35% intermediate fetal and early neonatal mortalities there were 29,56 and 48,71%. most common causes were distress respiratory syndrome (59,16%) and asphyxia (13,05%). perinatal mortality rate was 2,07 per 1000 live births and was adjusted to 140,7 per 1000 live twins. fetal and neonatal mortality were higher in low birth weigh, discordance weigh twins and vaginal birth. twin birth order had no influence. conclusions: in twin pregnancy are increased fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
