Abstract: objectives: a prospective case-control study was done considering known breast cancer risks factors in a group of female patients with breast cancer, benign breast diseases and without breast disease. the main objective was defining clinical criteria?s that help not only the physicians but also the patients with their parents about the clinical evaluation and the follow-up. methods: five hundred fifteen patients with breast cancer, 507 with benign breast disease, and 505 without breast disease were included. we registered, through personal interview, the following risk factors: family history of breast and ovarian cancer, exposition to female hormones (exogenous and exogenous) and previous benign breast disease. results: the significant results when we compared the group of breast cancer with the group without breast disease were as follows: family history of breast and ovarian cancer, age at menopause, null parity, and age at first live birth, number of abortions, lactation and previous benign breast disease. logistic regression model showed that the most important variables were: family history of breast and ovarian cancer. the significant results when we compared the group of breast cancer with the group of benign breast disease were as follows: ?strong? family history of breast cancer, oral contraceptives ingestion, lactation, hormonereplacement therapy and previous benign breast disease. logistic regression model showed that the most important variable was lactation. conclusion: although some hormonal factors were important, family history of breast and ovarian cancer, and lactation were the most important risk factors.
