the paper presents a statistical balance of 5 years of work carried out by the geriatric orthopedics service from 1997 (when it was created) to 2002 at "fructuoso rodríguez" teaching orthopedic hospital. it analyzes the most important achievements of this service such as highly qualified care to older patients; assistance personnel trained and updated in geriatrics courses; increase in the number of patients seen, extension of surgical services, 70% of patients with hip fractures were operated on within 24 hours, reduction in morbimortality rates of patients with hip fractures and better care provided to patients and their relatives.
