Abstract:

10 of the patients selected to undergo a bone marrow transplantation were studied. they previously received body radiations at doses that took them to the critical stage of the acute syndrome by radiation in order to destroy their marrow and with it the malignant cells that caused the base disease. blood samples were taken during fasting before and after the irradiation and on the immediate and and mediate posttransplantation to determine the values of thyroid hormones (t3 and t4), thyrotropin and the concentration of malonydialdehyde. the concentration of thyroid hormones behaved as in other severe patients, with the particularity of its increase, imputable to radiation in the first days. the malonyldialdehyde values decreased significantly among those patients that survived the transplantation and they were over the normal range in the patients who died later. the malonyldialdehyde and thyroid hormones values were visibly different between the groups of the survivors and the deceased, as in other critical patients. thyrotropin did not show great variations, although it was observed a certain trend to rise in the survivors and to keep invariable in the dead. the relations of t3 and t4 with the concentration of malonyldialdehyde make us think that these hormones are related to the oxidative stress suffered by the patients undergoing a bone marrow transplantation.
