Abstract:

the erythrocytes carriers of haemoglobin s ( b6 glu?val) are less flexible than the normal erythrocytes, which makes them more fragile and allow them to haemolyse easier. the orthovanillin and the isovanillin, chemical isomers of vanillin, may inhibit the polymerisation of desoxohaemoglobin s (antipolimerizing activity) and prevent the falciformation of erythrocytes. the cytotoxic activity of these compounds on normal erythrocytes and ss was determined at molar ratios 1:1, l:4, 1:8 and 1:10 by spectrophotometry, measuring the absorbance at a wave longitude l=545 nm of the free haemoglobin in the supernatant, after incubating the solution of erythrocytes with the compounds. the percentage of haemolysis was determined and the results showed that the average percentage of haemolysis calculated was under 1 %. no statistically significant differences were found among the means for molar ratio in a same class of erythrocytes (p = 0,05). there was not a dependence between the concentration and the haemolytic activity. the means between both types of erythrocytes were compared for all the molar ratios and there were no statistically significant differences. the results of previous papers on the haemolytic activity of vanillin were compared with that of its structural isomers, and it was observed that isovanillin and orthovanillin produced percentages of haemolysis lower than the ones caused by vanillin. the low haemolytic activity of these aromatic aldehydes potentiates their antipolimerizing activity.
