Análisis del programa de cáncer cervicouterino: Período 1990-1996

all over the world there is a marked incidencie of cancer and death from this cause. a descriptive and retrospective study of the program for early diagnosis of cervix cancer was conducted at the "josué país garcía" polyclinic-medical faculty, in santiago de cuba, during 7 years. 22 576 women took part in this program and underwent the pap smear from 1990 to 1996. data referring to the new cases and to those reexamined were registered by year in a table made to this end. the results of the pap smears, the number of women seen at the cervix pathology department, as well as the results of the anatomopathological study of the patients operated on, were also shown in the table. those women with abnormal cytological results were surveyed taking into account the following indicators: age, health actions taken, visits to the patients who did not go to the cervix pathology department and health education received. among the most important results it was observed a progressive increase of pap smears. the figures of pap smears which are not useful for the diagnosis were below the national index. among the patients with suspected results (nic), the age group 20-29 was the most affected, whereas the thighest number of positive cases was found in the age group 20-29. the attendance to the cervix patology department reached 100 % every year except 1992. the in situ carcinoma had the highest incidence within the anatomopathological findings. it was oncluded that the health actions fulfilled the proposed objetives and that the control and attention of the patients were attained.
