Abstract:

the genus brycon comprises 40 valid species, some of these with great potential for the brazilian fish culture, among them we can emphasize matrinx? (brycon amazonicus), piracanjuba (brycon orbignyanus), piabanha (brycon insignis) and piraputanga (brycon hilarii) stand out. farming potential is based on the high acceptance by the market because its excellent meat quality, fast initial growth and omnivorous feeding habit with tendency to herbivorous habit. due to the feeding behavior of the genus brycon, they tend to accept easily artificial diets when they are in captivity. furthermore, feed costs may be reduced because they assimilate vegetal origin protein very well. techniques to induce reproduction in captivity present good results. they respond well to the hormonal induction protocol for final maturation and spawning commonly used for most migrating species. however, hatchery is still an obstacle to the development of a consistent technological package for these species. few hours after hatching, larvae present high cannibalism, causing great mortality in the initial phase of hatchery. this characteristic demands the development of special techniques to reduce such losses. fattening conditions is not well studied yet, but some studies have demonstrated low protein requirement for this specie.
