Eficácia do uso intraoperatório de mitomicina C na cirurgia do pterígio: análise de 102 casos

purpose: measure of efficacy and the security of intraoperative of mitomycin c (mmc) in the pterygium surgery. methods: realized prospective analysis of 102 patients (204 eyes) divided in two groups submitted intraoperative mmc 0.02 % for 2 minutes or saline solution 0.9%. the patients were available in 1o, 7 o, 21o, 30o, 60o and 90o days of postoperative. results: the pterygium was more prevalence in females (58,33%). the age various 33 to 69 years. the recidive (9) was in the 90o po in the group of mmc. in the control group was identificated two recidives in 60 days. the complications found in mmc group were: ceratitis, lips edema, dehiscence of suture, ischemia, granuloma, corneal dellen and simblefaro. conclusion: the use of mmc was useful in reducing the rate of recurrence in pterygium compared to the use of saline solution, but its harmful effects must always be evaluated.
