Diet Composition of the Barn Owl Tyto alba (Aves: Tytonidae) and Spotted Owlet Athene brama (Aves: Strigidae) Coexisting in an Urban Environment

A. Mohamed Samsoor Ali, R. Santhanakrishnan
The comparative diet of the Barn OwlTyto alba and the Spotted Owlet Athene brama were studied in an urban habitat of Madurai District, Tamil Nadu, Southern India, during January–December 2008. Regurgitated pellets of these two owl species were analysed to understand their dietary composition. The diet of the Barn Owl mainly comprised small mammals such as Suncus murinus(51.9%) and Rattus rattus(28.6%), while the diet of the Spotted Owlet comprised mostly arthropods (84.9%); Coleoptera (40.9%) a...

Breeding biology of the Small Bee-eater Merops orientalis (Latham, 1801) in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu, India

S. Asokan, A. Mohamed Samsoor Ali, R. Manikannan
The breeding biology of Small Bee-eater Merops orientalis was studied in Nagapattinam District of Mannampandal, Tamil Nadu, India between 2005 and 2006. A total of 34 nests were studied and the bee-eaters were found to excavate long tunnels ranging in length from 79 to 125cm (104.9±123.48 cm) and ending in widened egg chambers. The mean diameter and circumference of the entrance hole opening was 8.94±1.03 cm and 26.9±3.55 cm respectively. They excavated nest holes at a mean height of 52.1±2.69 ...

Diet Variations of the Barn Owl Tyto alba (Scopoli, 1769) in Madurai District, Tamil Nadu, Southern India

RAMACHANDRAN SANTHANAKRISHNAN, ABDUL HAMEED MOHAMED SAMSOOR ALI, UTHIRAPATHI ANBARASAN
Diet variations of Barn Owl Tyto alba were determined by the analysis of 3,133 regurgitated pellets collected from ten different roost-sites in Madurai District from 2007 to 2009. The overall diet comprised 85.5% small mammals, 2.2% birds, 0.1% reptiles, 0.9% amphibians and 2.4% insects. Among small mammals, Suncus murinus and Rattus rattus were predominant: they comprised 37.2% and 23.0% of the 4,295 prey taken by Barn Owls. The number of prey items per pellet varied from one to 16 w...

Studies on the impact of industrial pollutants on the muscle tissues of lates calcarifer in uppanar estuary, cuddalore, south coast of india, using ft-ir spectroscopy

Balakrishnan, K. and Ronald Ross, P.
The discharge of industrial effluents having heavy metals throw enormous deleterious impacts on aquatic organisms especially in fish. This potential accumulation of heavy metals in the fish tissues are subsequently transferred to human beings through the food chain. Thus, heavy metal pollution in fish has become an important worldwide concern, not only because of the threat to fish, but also due to the health risks associated with fish consumption. In this context, to investigate the extent of d...

Microbial Tyrosinases: Promising Enzymes for Pharmaceutical, Food Bioprocessing, and Environmental Industry

Kamal Uddin Zaidi, Ayesha S. Ali, Sharique A. Ali, Ishrat Naaz
Tyrosinase is a natural enzyme and is often purified to only a low degree and it is involved in a variety of functions which mainly catalyse the o-hydroxylation of monophenols into their corresponding o-diphenols and the oxidation of o-diphenols to o-quinones using molecular oxygen, which then polymerizes to form brown or black pigments. The synthesis of o-diphenols is a potentially valuable catalytic ability and thus tyrosinase has attracted a lot of attention with respect to industrial applica...

Study of Obstacle Avoidance Behavior of Wheeled Mobile Robots under the Simulation of Human Logical and Imaginary Thinking

Dong Liu
We propose that using the simulation of human imaginary thinking yields better results than logical thinking in the study of obstacle avoidance behavior of wheeled mobile robots. The simulation of human imaginary thinking can be realized by intelligent algorithm. In experiment, BP Neural Network is used to construct the abstracted vectors of the imaginary thinking, which will train and build the network. The experimental results show that robots using logical thinking have local circling while r...

Research on Classification Algorithm of Reduced Support Vector Machine for Driving Fatigue Detection

Yu xiang Kuang, Qun Wu
In order to improve the accuracy and real-time performance of driving fatigue detection, a driving fatigue detection method is proposed based on reduced support vector machine algorithm. The ECG indicators are treated as human fatigue characterization indicators in the method. The human ECG can be obtained through experiment in different state, and PERCLOS value in selecting and controlling environmental conditions is taken as a basis for human fatigue state judging. Thus, the ECG data from expe...
