Characterization of a MEMS BioChip for planar patch-clamp recording

Santosh Pandey, Mehrotra, R. Wykosky, S. White, M.H.
We describe a planar MEMS silicon structure to record ion channel currents in biological cells. The conventional method of performing an electrophysiological experiment, 'patch-clamping', employs a glass micropipette. The micropipette tip is a source of thermal noise because of its inherent, tapered, conical structure, giving rise to a large pipette resistance. This pipette resistance, when coupled with the biological cell capacitance, limits the available bandwidth of single ion channel recordi...

Simulation of biological ion channels with technology computer-aided design

Santosh Pandey, Bortei-Doku, A. White, M.H.
Computer simulations of realistic ion channel structures have always been challenging and a subject of rigorous study. Simulations based on continuum electrostatics have proven to be computationally cheap and reasonably accurate in predicting a channel's behavior. In this paper we discuss the use of a device simulator, SILVACO, to build a solid-state model for KcsA channel and study its steady-state response. SILVACO is a well-established program, typically used by electrical engineers to simula...

Effective drug combination for Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes discovered by output-driven feedback system control technique

Ding, X. Njus, Z. Kong, T. Su, W. Ho, C.-M. Pandey, S.
Infections from parasitic nematodes (or roundworms) contribute to a significant disease burden and productivity losses for humans and livestock. The limited number of anthelmintics (or antinematode drugs) available today to treat these infections are rapidly losing their efficacy as multidrug resistance in parasites becomes a global health challenge. We propose an engineering approach to discover an anthelmintic drug combination that is more potent at killing wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans wor...

Flexible and disposable paper- and plastic based gel micropads for nematode handling, imaging, and chemical testing

Njus, Zach Kong, Taejoon Kalwa, Upender Legner, Christopher Weinstein, Matthew Flanigan, Shawn Saldanha, Jenifer Pandey, Santosh
In this paper, we explore the use of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (?PADs) to study the behavior of Caenorhabditis elegans. We show how these devices can be fabricated on paper and plastic substrates, as well as how to load, visualize, and transfer single and multiple nematodes. We also demonstrate the use of anthelmintic drug, levamisole, to perform chemical testing on C. elegans. Furthermore, we provide a custom program that is able to recognize individual worms on the ?PADs in r...

KAHRAMANMARA? ?L?NDEK? R?SK GRUPLARINDA COX?ELLA BURNET??’ YE KAR?I OLU?AN FAZ II IGG ANT?KORLARININ SEROLOJ?K OLARAK ?NCELENMES?/ Serological Investigation Of Phase II IgG Antibodies Against To Coxiella burnetii In Risk Groups In Kahramanmara? City

Ekrem K?RE?C?, Metin Tansu U?UZ
Q fever which is seen in most countries throughout the world, is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii a bacteria of Gram negative, obligate intracellular. The purpose of this study was to search the seroprevalence of C.burnetii and Q fever in risk groups in Kahramanmara? city, Turkey. A total of 40 voluntary individuals (34 male, 6 female; age range, 20-60years) including veterinarians, cattle-dealers, and butchers working in Kahramanmara? city were included in the study. C.burnetii ph...

Mitochondria are Naturally Micro Robots - A review

Raffaella Aversa, Relly Victoria V. Petrescu, Antonio Apicella and Florian Ion T. Petrescu
The mitochondrion is a natural robot (cell) with a length of about one micron. Between organisms (plant, animal or human) with its organs and the atomic and molecular components are positioned based cells, which are building all the necessary organs body. Years ago, medical specialists who are studying organ disease have considered that is caused by impaired organ or related to other organs. For example, it was considered that all nerve diseases have started from stress due to disorder of the hy...

A Zebrafish Model for Studies on Esophageal Epithelial Biology

Hao Chen
Mammalian esophagus exhibits a remarkable change in epithelial structure during the tran- sition from embryo to adult. However, the molecular mechanisms of esophageal epithelial development are not well understood. Zebrafish (Danio rerio), a common model organism for vertebrate development and gene function, has not previously been characterized as a model system for esophageal epithelial development. In this study, we characterized a piece of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium ...

Streptomyces sp. VRY-1 was screened for its bioactive potentials against various pathogenic microorganisms and was found to possess antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhimurium (drug resistant strain of bacteria) and various other pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Optimization of cultural conditions for production of antibiotic showed that maximum antibiotic production occurred on 10th day in stationary cultural, 28?? C, 8.0 pH, liver extract, 1.5%(w/v) glucose. The bioactive compound was...
