Abstract

In this study the aim is to determine the risk factors for development of infection and infectious agents in intensive care units of Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine. Material and Methods: Between November 15th, 2004 and May 15th, 2005 patients who stayed over 48 hours in intensive care units were followed prospectively. 63 patients diagnosed as hospital infection and in whom infectious agents were isolated were included in the study. As a control group 56 random patients who have no hospital infections were selected. Avarage ages, intensive care unit stay, Acute Phsiology and Chronic Health Evaluation 2 score, mortality rate, entubation, tracheostomy, ventilation support, central venous catheter and periferic venous catheter, urinary catheter, nasogastric tube, enteral and parenteral feding days and duration of previous antbiotic usage before diagnosis of case and control groups were studied. Findings: Age, hospital stay and Acute Phsiology and Chronic Health Evaluation 2 score were determined as significant and independent risk factors for development of infection. Other risk factors determined for development of infection were the presence of mechanic ventilation, tracheostomy, central venous catheter and total parenteral nutrition (p<0.05). In intensive care unit mortality was 46% in patients who developed nosocomial infection whereas in control group it was 19,6%. Conclusion: Studies about risk facors for the development of infections in every hospital together with studies of infectious agents and antibiotic sensitivity patterns will provide proper hospital specific infection control measures.
