This article analyzes the grammatical and sociolinguistic features of the diminutive in Spanish through the elaboration of a corpus of subtitles produced from the three seasons of the Mexican series La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers). The results of the analysis of this corpus reflect the high frequency of diminutive use in Mexico, its functional diversity, and its ability to ascribe to different lexical categories. In sociolinguistic terms, it also shows the characteristics of this appreciative suffix in terms of its use by different genders, ages, and social classes. In addition, the article provides evidence that subtitles of audiovisual material can be employed as a corpus linguistic resource.
