MICROBIOLOGICAL STUDY ON ICE FROM A FISH STALL
E. Tirloni,B. Ripamonti,P. Cattaneo
Italian Journal of Food Safety , 2012, DOI: 10.4081/ijfs.2012.3.83
Abstract: The ice used for exposure of fish products could be a source of secondary contamination due to ice machine, due to not respected good manufacturing practices, particularly when ice is left on the fish stall and the next day the new layer is deposited over the old one. Aim of this study was the verification of the hygienic risk of this procedure through analyses of the liquid produced by the zones “thawed cephalopods” and “fresh whole fish”. Almost the microorganisms found were Gram negative (in particular Pseudomonadaceae).

Abstract: the diagnosis of the cardiovascular diseases in the horse is simple when the failures are evident and are present at rest. that situation is complicated when the dysfunction is sub clinic and only evident during exercise. with the purpose to evaluate the global and regional inotropic behavior of the left ventricular myocardium the authors develop a test of ultrasonic computerized tomography (uct) with pharmacological drug effort in the horse. they propose as drug protocol the association of atropine sulphate (15μg/kg) and dobutamina hidrocloride (in growing dose of 3μg/kg/min, 6μg/kg/min and 9μg/kg/min) with step administration until reaching a stable cardiac rate above the 100 beats per minute. the capture and synchronization of images was carried out with an specifi c software, complemented with t-mode echocardiography measurements (at rest and during the maximum effort) of the following parameters: diastolic and systolic thickness of interventricular septum; diastolic and systolic thickness of the left ventricular free wall, diastolic and systolic left ventricular diameter and fractional shortening.

Abstract: ARGO-YBJ is an extensive air shower detector located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., 606 g cm 2 atmospheric depth, Tibet, China). It is made by a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs, total surface ~6700 m2) grouped into 153 units called "clusters". The low energy threshold of the experiment is obtained using the "scaler operation mode", counting all the particles hitting the detector without reconstruction of the shower size and arrival direction. For each cluster the signals generated by these particles are put in coincidence in a narrow time window (150 ns) and read by four independent scaler channels, giving the counting rates of channel ≥1, ≥2, ≥3 and ≥4 hits. The study of these counting rates pointed out a different behavior of channel ≥1 respect to the higher multiplicity channels: while the MC simulations can account fairly well for the coincident counting rates, the expectation for channel ≥1 is sensibly less than the measured value. Moreover, the regression coefficient with the atmospheric pressure for channel ≥1 is also about half of the value measured for the coincident counting rates: seemingly half of these counts did not cross the atmosphere.Measurements of the natural radioactivity background in the air of the detector hall and a MC simulation to estimate its contribution on our counting rates are presented and discussed.

The diagnosis of the cardiovascular diseases in the horse is simple when the failures are evident and are present at rest. International Journal of COPD , 2013,
Abstract: Paolo Scarpazza,1 Cristoforo Incorvaia,2 Chiara Melacini,1 Roberta Cattaneo,1 Cristiano Bonacina,1 Gian Galeazzo Riario-Sforza,2 Walter Casali1 1Pneumology Unit, Ospedale Civile, Vimercate, 2Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento, Milan, Italy Abstract: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) was introduced as an alternative to invasive mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure caused from exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the 1980s, and its use gradually rose worldwide. Seventy-eight patients (57 males, mean age 78.3 ± 9.2 years) undergoing NIV were evaluated. Of them, 48 (62.3%) had acute hypercapnic respiratory failure because of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, and the remaining 30 had acute hypercapnic respiratory failure from other causes, mainly cardiac failure. All patients were treated by NIV using the bi-level positive airway pressure set up at high pressure/high backup rate. NIV was successful in 67 subjects (85.9%) and the patients were discharged, 57 of whom continued NIV at home and ten had spontaneous breathing. NIV was unsuccessful in eleven patients, ten of whom died and one was successfully treated by invasive mechanical ventilation. Significant differences were detected for a higher basal Glasgow Coma Scale score in successfully treated patients (P = 0.007), a higher basal Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation score in unsuccessfully treated patients (P = 0.004), and a lower pH after 1 hour in unsuccessfully treated patients (P = 0.015). These findings show a very high rate of success of NIV in patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure not only from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but also from cardiac failure. This suggests that the use of invasive mechanical ventilation may be further reduced, with a decrease in its known complications as well. Keywords: invasive ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, acute respiratory failure
CRITICAL ASPECTS IN SCRAPS OF COLD SMOKED SALMON PROCESSING
C. Bernardi,B. Ripamonti,M.A. Marzano,P. Cattaneo
Italian Journal of Food Safety , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/ijfs.2011.1s.145
Abstract: The aim of the paper was to summarize the critical aspects in the processing of smoked salmon scraps as resulted from seven different lots of samples through microbiological and chemical-physical analysis. Results demonstrate that this product has very variable salt content, high microbial counts influencing the shelf-life, rancidity problems depending on the raw material and is heavily contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes.
Effects of adsorbents in dairy cow diet on milk quality and cheese-making properties

Italian Journal of Animal Science , 2010, DOI: 10.4081/ijas.2007.1s.460
Abstract: The use of adsorbents (clinoptilolite+sepiolite) in the diet of cows was evaluated in two trials. A total of 52 Italian Friesian cows were assigned to one of two dietary treatments, control and adsorbent (CON vs. ADS). Individual and bulk milk samples were collected. On individual data, no significant difference was found between treatments in milk yield, milk fat, protein, and lactose concentrations, milk protein yield, pH, and titratable acidity, both in summer and spring. In spring only, there was a trend (P = 0.07) for a higher milk fat yield and a lower somatic cell number in ADS than in CON group. In summer only, milk clotting time was higher in ADS than in CON group (P < 0.05). On bulk milk, no significant differences in components and technological features were found between the CON and ADS groups. The bulk milk contents in total and soluble Ca were 1100 vs. 1108 mg/kg and 378 vs. 369 mg/kg for CON and ADS respectively, proving to be unaffected by treatment and suggesting a lack of interference by ADS on milk Ca availability for cheese-making process. We concluded that, for a period of 12 weeks, the addition of 1% on DM of the diet for lactating cows of non-nutritional adsorbents does not negatively affect milk yield, milk composition, and cheese-making features.
FOOD SAFETY IN CATERING INDUSTRY
C. Balzaretti,M.A. Marzano,P. Cattaneo
Italian Journal of Food Safety , 2009, DOI: 10.4081/ijfs.2008.3.41
Abstract: Catering industry plays a very important role in public health management, because about 30% of total daily meals are consumed in catering industry (restaurants, bar). In this work food safety was evaluated in 20 catering centres throughout microbiological analyses of different categories of meals. Results demonstrate that there was an important decrease of microbial contamination between 2006 and 2007, no pathogens were found in 217 samples examined: this was obtained by improving voluntary controls.

Abstract: We study 3-dimensional BF theories and define observables related to knots and links. The quantum expectation values of these observables give the coefficients of the Alexander-Conway polynomial.
Fully Convective Magnetorotational Turbulence in Stratified Shearing Boxes

Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1088/2041-8205/771/2/L23
Abstract: We present a numerical study of turbulence and dynamo action in stratified shearing boxes with zero magnetic flux. We assume that the fluid obeys the perfect gas law and has finite (constant) thermal diffusivity. We choose radiative boundary conditions at the vertical boundaries in which the heat flux is propor- tional to the fourth power of the temperature. We compare the results with the corresponding cases in which fixed temperature boundary conditions are applied. The most notable result is that the formation of a fully convective state in which the density is nearly constant as a function of height and the heat is transported to the upper and lower boundaries by overturning motions is robust and persists even in cases with radiative boundary conditions. Interestingly, in the convective regime, although the diffusive transport is negligible the mean stratification does not relax to an adiabatic state.
