----------------------------------------------- Professional core competencies integrated into the translation classroom. At a tertiary or university level, formal courses in technical and scientific translation aim at instructing translators specialized in both particular areas. There exists a widespread agreement regarding contents and methodology during the lower levels; however, when it comes to approaching specialized subjects, in particular technical and scientific, those in charge of the teaching-learning process are faced with different questions that make teaching decissions difficult. In the first place, this work will introduce some of the key issues to reflect upon at the time of designing a teaching proposal. Several and specific questions will arise therefrom: resulting answers show a line of thought which is focused on achieving the initial objective. In the second place, we'll put forward a pedagogic and teaching proposal already put into practice in translating classrooms. Its outstanding characteristic is its dual approach: a set of teaching strategies to enrich students' theoretical and practical knowledge to facilit

The study of party systems and political parties is one of the largest subfields in political science. Classic studies in advanced democracies focused primarily on party systems and developed theories about the causes and consequences of different types of systems. In recent years, new academic work begun to differentiate parties within systems by understanding their organizational structure, their internal dynamics, the different ways in which they interact with their constituencies, and the strategies that they use to attract voters. Studies show that parties within the same system behave and react differently given their internal conditions. This article reviews three scholarly books that deal with this issue. The works analyze the internal dynamics of Latin American political parties and their capacity to respond and adapt their structures when environmental challenges take place. Trabajos clásicos llevados a cabo en democracias avanzadas, enfocaron su atención en sistemas de partidos y desarrollaron teorías sobre las causas y consecuencias producidas por diferentes tipos de sistemas. Abstract: objective: to analyze the discourses of primary care midwives on access to and utilization of the cervical cancer prevention program. methods: a qualitative study was conducted in an area of low population density with a high proportion of rural population in segovia, spain, between 2008 and 2009. semi-structured interviews were carried out. ten primary care midwives were interviewed covering the 16 basic health districts of the city. data analysis was based on grounded theory methodology. results: access to and utilization of the cervical cancer prevention program was associated with attendance to midwife visits, women's experiences with cervical smears and their perception of risk of cervical cancer. geographic distance to the health center, difficult access to immigrant women who have no health insurance, and being unaware of the program offered are some of the perceived barriers. social exclusion is also perceived as a barrier of access to and utilization of the program. the recommendation to participate in the program made by the primary care physician was identified as the main facilitator. conclusions: the midwives perceived inequalities in access to and utilization of the cervical cancer prevention program that are associated to individual characteristics of women, and contextual characteristics such as the geographical environment where they live and program's infrastructure. there is inequality of access to care of underrepresented groups of women such as immigrant women and those residing in rural areas.
A Feedfordward Adaptive Controller to Reduce the Imaging Time of Large-Sized Biological Samples with a SPM-Based Multiprobe Station

Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120100686
Abstract: The time required to image large samples is an important limiting factor in SPM-based systems. In multiprobe setups, especially when working with biological samples, this drawback can make impossible to conduct certain experiments. In this work, we present a feedfordward controller based on bang-bang and adaptive controls. The controls are based in the difference between the maximum speeds that can be used for imaging depending on the flatness of the sample zone. Topographic images of Escherichia coli bacteria samples were acquired using the implemented controllers. Results show that to go faster in the flat zones, rather than using a constant scanning speed for the whole image, speeds up the imaging process of large samples by up to a 4x factor.
Nanocharacterization of Soft Biological Samples in Shear Mode with Quartz Tuning Fork Probes

Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120404803
Abstract: Quartz tuning forks are extremely good resonators and their use is growing in scanning probe microscopy. Nevertheless, only a few studies on soft biological samples have been reported using these probes. In this work, we present the methodology to develop and use these nanosensors to properly work with biological samples. The working principles, fabrication and experimental setup are presented. The results in the nanocharacterization of different samples in different ambients are presented by using different working modes: amplitude modulation with and without the use of a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) and frequency modulation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria are imaged in nitrogen using amplitude modulation. Microcontact printed antibodies are imaged in buffer using amplitude modulation with a PLL. Finally, metastatic cells are imaged in air using frequency modulation.

Abstract: using pcr-based assays with specific primers for amplification of the ribosomal dna intergenic spacer region (igs) and a portion of the mitochondrial dna small subunit ribosomal rna gene (mtdna ssu rrna), the genetic variability among verticillium dahliae isolates from olive (olea europaea) and other host species from argentina and brazil was estimated. the derived upgma-generated phenograms based upon the restriction fingerprinting data of rdna igs products revealed genetic differences, correlating with the host of origin. isolates infecting olive genetically distinct from those from cocoa (theobroma cacao) and sunflower (helianthus annuus). digestion of mitochondrial dna ssu rrna pcr products revealed less variability, distinguishing only one isolate from sunflower. ribosomal dna its restriction patterns were identical for all isolates of v. dahliae, irrespective of host of origin. these preliminary results may have relevance for verticillium wilt control practices, possibly reflecting a different evolutionary origin, or reproductive isolation of the pathogen in olive, distinct from populations of other hosts.
