Outcome after Discontinuation of Proton Pump Inhibitors at a Residential Care Site: Quality Improvement Project
Anita Lo,Candy Lee,Kiran Ubhi,Michael Milewski
- , 2017,
Abstract: Increased prescribing of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the past few decades can be attributed mainly to long-term use of this type of therapy. Recent evidence indicates signals of harm associated with long-term use of PPIs, such as increased risk of Clostridium difficile infection, recurrence of C. difficile infection, and fracture. A few studies have assessed the effectiveness of step-down management of patients receiving long-term PPI therapy in ambulatory care settings. However, it is unknown whether PPIs can be discontinued in older people without return of gastrointestinal symptoms
First child of immigrant workers and their descendants in West Germany: Interrelation of events, disruption, or adaptation?
Nadja Milewski
Demographic Research , 2007,
Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of immigration on the transition to motherhood among women from Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, and the former Yugoslavia in West Germany. A hazard-regression analysis is applied to data of the German Socio-Economic Panel study. We distinguish between the first and second immigrant generation. The results show that the transition rates to a first birth of first-generation immigrants are elevated shortly after they move country. Elevated birth risks that occur shortly following the immigration are traced back to an interrelation of events - these are migration, marriage, and first birth. We do not find evidence of a fertility-disruption effect after immigration. The analysis indicates that second-generation immigrants are more adapted to the lower fertility levels of West Germans than their mothers' generation is.
The influence of fuel composition on Solid Oxide Fuel Cell obtained by using the advanced mathematical model

Journal of Power Technologies , 2011,
Abstract: The advanced mathematical model of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is presented. The governing equations of the model are presented and described. Based on the model the influence of fuel composition on SOFC performance is shown. Hydrogen is used as reference fuel.
A Campaign of the Great Hetman Jan Zamoyski in Moldavia (1595). Part I. Politico-diplomatic and military preliminaries
Dariusz Milewski
Codrul Cosminului , 2012,
Abstract: Polish-Turkish relations in the sixteenth century were generally peaceful, but the source of a conflict remained because of recurring bouts of Tatars and Cossacks, and the unexpired Polish claims to sovereignty over Moldavia. The outbreak of the war between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs in 1593 offered for Poland an opportunity to strengthen its policy in the southeast. The movement of the Christian vassals of the Sultan to the side of the Emperor Rudolf II resulted in the relocation of military operations to the territory of today’s Romania. The subordination of the Romanian lands to the Habsburgs or their complete subjugation by the Ottomans was dangerous to Rzeczpospolita. Thus, in the summer of 1595, the Chancellor and the Great Hetman of the Crown Jan Zamoyski decided to enter with a part of Polish troops to Moldavia.
Family change and migration in the life course: An introduction
Hill Kulu,Nadja Milewski
Demographic Research , 2007,
Abstract: This article is an introduction to Special Collection 6 of Demographic Research whose articles investigate the interrelations between the family and migration behaviour of individuals in industrialised countries. We first review the life-course approach and previous research on the interplay between family change and migration. We then describe the contribution of the articles in the collection. This is followed by a discussion of selected issues raised in the papers and an outline of future research avenues. We argue that the life-course approach and event-history analysis offer a fruitful framework to examine how individuals simultaneously structure their family lives and residential trajectories, and thus shape demographic change in society.
An innovative method of modeling direct methanol fuel cells
Anna Trendewicz,Jaroslaw Milewski
Journal of Power Technologies , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper a computer model of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) developed with the use of HYSYS software was presented. Chemical reactions of methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction were executed in HYSYS software which eliminated the need of creating a complex electrochemical model of these reactions. Obtained resutls were used for determining maximum cell voltage and limiting current density of the investigated fuel cell. An equivalent electrical circuit served for calculating cell voltage after taking ohmic losses and methanol crossover losses into account. A simulation of polarization curve for a cell supplied with 0.5 mol/dm 3 methanol and pure oxygen operating at 70 C was performed and validated with experimental data. The e ects of cathode gas humiditication and methanol concentration change in the range of 0.5 mol/dm 3 –3 mol/dm 3 on cell performance were investigated. Di culties with detremining methanol oxidation rate and methanol crossover loss correctly enfrorced the use of experimental data thus greatly limiting the range of model’s applicability. Challenges encountered during direct methanol fuel cell modeling were described.

Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper we introduce new definition of Hodge structures and show that $\R$-Hodge structures are determined by $\R$-linear operators that are annihilated by the Weierstrass $\sigma$-function
Mixed Hodge structures and Weierstrass $σ$-function

Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: A $\sigma$-operator on a complexification $V_{\C}$ of an $\R$-vector space $V_{\R}$ is an operator $A \in \rm{End}_{\C} (V_{\C})$ such that $\sigma (A) = 0$ where $\sigma (z)$ denotes the Weierstrass $\sigma$-function. In this paper we define the notion of the strongly pseudo-real $\sigma$-operator and prove that there is one to one correspondence between real mixed Hodge structures and strongly pseudo-real $\sigma$-operators.
Potential of an ensemble Kalman smoother for stratospheric chemical-dynamical data assimilation
Thomas Milewski,Michel S. Bourqui
Tellus A , 2013, DOI: 10.3402/tellusa.v65i0.18541
Abstract: A new stratospheric ensemble Kalman smoother (EnKS) system is introduced, and the potential of assimilating posterior stratospheric observations to better constrain the whole model state at analysis time is investigated. A set of idealised perfect-model Observation System Simulation Experiments (OSSE) assimilating synthetic limb-sounding temperature or ozone retrievals are performed with a chemistry–climate model. The impact during the analysis step is characterised in terms of the root mean square error reduction between the forecast state and the analysis state. The performances of (1) a fixed-lag EnKS assimilating observations spread over 48 hours and (2) an ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) assimilating a denser network of observations are compared with a reference EnKF. The ozone assimilation with EnKS shows a significant additional reduction of analysis error of the order of 10% for dynamical and chemical variables in the extratropical upper troposphere lower stratosphere (UTLS) and Polar Vortex regions when compared to the reference EnKF. This reduction has similar magnitude to the one achieved by the denser-network EnKF assimilation. Similarly, the temperature assimilation with EnKS significantly decreases the error in the UTLS for the wind variables like the denser-network EnKF assimilation. However, the temperature assimilation with EnKS has little or no significant impact on the temperature and ozone analyses, whereas the denser-network EnKF shows improvement with respect to the reference EnKF. The different analysis impacts from the assimilation of current and posterior ozone observations indicate the capacity of time-lagged background-error covariances to represent temporal interactions up to 48 hours between variables during the ensemble data assimilation analysis step, and the possibility to use posterior observations whenever additional current observations are unavailable. The possible application of the EnKS for reanalyses is highlighted.
Comparative analysis of time constants in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell processes – selection of key processes for modeling power systems
Jaros?aw Milewski,Janusz Lewandowski
Journal of Power Technologies , 2011,
Abstract: The article presents a comparative analysis of the time constants of the main processes in the SOFC. The analysis was used to determine those processes most relevant to the modeling of an energy system comprising a fuel cell. The hybrid system, in addition to the fuel cell, has other devices (such as compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, etc.) working with it that may limit permissible ranges of parameter changes during transient processes. On the other hand, fuel cells aect other devices making up the system, including by restricting their operation in terms of dynamic responses.Determination of time constants of the main processes in the cell and their analysis and comparison with time constants of other devices will allow selection of the most important processes from modeling point of vies and simplify the dynamic fuel cell model, so the class of fuel cell will match classes of models of other system elements.
