Quantifying Candidacy for Deprescribing of Proton Pump Inhibitors among Long-Term Care Residents
Alanna Doell,Allison Bell,Ashley Walus,Jaclyn To
- , 2018,
Abstract: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a commonly prescribed drug class used to inhibit gastric acid secretion. They are prescribed for both treatment and prophylaxis of several gastrointestinal conditions. Although PPIs can be used safely in the short term, several serious adverse effects have been reported following long-term use, including increased risk of falls and fragility fractures. Long-term care home (LTCH) residents represent a population in which the long-term adverse effects of PPIs can be significant and PPI deprescribing should be considered when appropriate
Impact of Pharmacists in a Community-Based Home Care Service: A Pilot Program
Ashley N Walus,Donna M M Woloschuk
- , 2017,
Abstract: Historically, pharmacists have not been included on home care teams, despite the fact that home care patients frequently experience medication errors. Literature describing Canadian models of pharmacy practice in home care settings is limited. The optimal service delivery model and distribution of clinical activities for home care pharmacists remain unclear

Treatment of psychological co-morbidities in common gastrointestinal and hepatologic disorders
Antonina A Mikocka-Walus
World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics , 2010,
Abstract: Anxiety and depressive disorders frequently coexist with gastrointestinal and hepatologic conditions. Despite their high prevalence, approach to treating these co-morbidities is not always straightforward. This paper aims to review the current literature into etiology of psychological co-morbidities and their treatment in three conditions commonly encountered at gastroenterology outpatient clinics, namely inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic hepatitis C (HepC). The paper demonstrates that although psychotherapy (and cognitive-behavioural therapy in particular) has been established as an effective treatment in IBS, more studies are needed in HepC and IBD. Antidepressants have been recognized as an effective treatment for psychological and somatic symptoms in IBS and for depression in HepC, but good quality studies in IBD are lacking despite the promising preliminary findings from animal models and case studies. Further studies in this area are needed.
Advances in Laser Treatment Options for East Asian Patients: A Review  [PDF]
Ashley Liau
Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2025.153007
Abstract: Research Background: Laser treatments are commonly used for various dermatological concerns. East Asian patients are typically classified as Fitzpatrick skin types III - V, characterized by increased melanin content. This results in a higher risk of complications such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following laser treatment. Despite the growing use of lasers in aesthetic dermatology, few studies have focused specifically on the efficacy and safety of laser modalities for East Asian populations. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted on PubMed for each laser, focusing on Fitzpatrick skin types III - V among East Asian patients only. Results: The Alexandrite and Er:YAG lasers appeared to be the most promising modalities for treating pigmentation and scarring in East Asian skin, with minimal side effects and favorable safety profiles. The picosecond Nd:YAG laser was found to be beneficial for pigmentation reduction, offering lower treatment discomfort and faster healing compared to the Q-switched Nd:YAG model. The CO2 laser, while effective for scarring and texture improvement, was associated with a higher risk of post-inflammatory complications in patients with darker skin types. Conclusion: The Alexandrite and Er:YAG lasers are recommended for East Asian patients due to their safety and efficacy for pigmentation and scarring. Clinicians should consider these lasers for treating East Asian skin to optimize outcomes and minimize adverse effects. Further studies are needed to explore alternative or synergistic treatments and to include more diverse patient cohorts for broader applicability.
Therapist Positionality: A Cornerstone of Antiracist Clinical Practice  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2025.1311004
Abstract: Therapist positionality is a foundational principle of antiracist clinical practice, yet it remains underemphasized in practitioner education, training, and ongoing professional development. Positionality refers to the interplay of a therapist’s intersecting identities, including race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and professional status, and how these shape power, perception, and relational dynamics. This article examines the role of positionality across clinical, collegial, and supervisory relationships, offering strategies to promote reflexivity, cultural humility, and relational accountability. Using positionality, clinicians can move beyond cultural competence into an ongoing, embodied practice of cultural humility, ethical engagement, and cultural responsiveness, particularly with clients and colleagues from marginalized communities.
Quality assessment of NIR finger vascular images for exposure parameter optimization.
Adam Popowicz,Krzysztof Bernacki,Michal Walus
- , 2016,
Abstract: The measurement of image quality plays an important role in all acquisition systems. In many medical applications, such as in the presented Near Infrared (NIR) imaging of the finger vascular system, there is no possibility of comparing the system outcomes with a reference data set. As a solution for this problem, a range of available methods have been presented, which try to reflect or imitate subjective human operator assessment. In this paper, we present a review of such quality metrics and introduce a novel approach based on distance transformations. The proposed method was compared with the state-of-the-art metrics on NIR vascular system images obtained by our constructed acquisition device. By changing the intensity of the finger backlight and by examining intentionally blurred images, we proved that our approach was capable of providing most sensible quality outcomes, while the others turned out to be much less reliable. The proposed evaluation technique may also be employed in any other medical application, where the assessment of the image quality has a direct impact on the final diagnosis
Trans-Attraction: Not Kink or Fetish, but a Legitimate Sexual Orientation*  [PDF]
Wendy Ashley, Randy Robertson
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2020, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2020.810014
Abstract: Cisgender men who have sex with transgender women (MSTGW) are a relatively invisible population, known primarily through porn, erotica, kink, or diagnostic categorization. Labeled gyandromorphophilic, trans-amorous, trans-erotic and tranny chasers, the monikers used to describe the sexuality of MSTGW do not consistently encompass the nuances of orientation, attraction, identity and behavior of this population. Because they challenge conventional sexual orientation categories, MSTGW are often reduced to designation as subsets of existing binaries or variant type of sexuality, excluding them from the validation, support and connection that comes with community identification. In an effort to challenge the heteronormative, cisnormative and transphobic oppression inherent in MSTGW designation, the authors utilize the sex positive term trans-attraction. This article seeks to address the research question: What is the lived experience of a self-identified trans-attracted cisgender man? Using a qualitative auto-ethnographic approach, the authors describe and analyze a case study (Randy’s story) to expose readers to the praxis of our collaborative autoethnography. The authors utilize reflexivity to contemplate a lived experience of trans-attraction, explore the limited binaries of sexual orientation, and consider trans-attraction as less of an urban phenomenon and more of a legitimate sexual orientation.
Beyond “Weaponization:” Reframing Identity and Trauma in Social Work Education  [PDF]
Wendy Ashley, Allen Lipscomb
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2026, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2026.144002
Abstract: Social work graduate programs increasingly describe students and early career faculty invoking identity and trauma in ways that can operate as power moves within academic settings. Commonly labeled as “weaponizing” identity or trauma, these dynamics can be analyzed through a critically conscious, anti-oppressive theoretical lens without discounting the reality of identity-based harm or the pervasiveness of trauma. Using an intersectional, antiracist, trauma-informed framework, we contextualize these behaviors amid generational shifts, social-media logics, the disruptions of COVID-19, and contemporary socio-political racial polarization to illuminate their nuance and variability. The central charge of this article is to clarify when identity and trauma-based claims highlight inequities and impact justice or learning, and when they are co-opted to silence others, halt inquiry, evade accountability, or circumvent institutional roles and policies. The article proposes recommendations to guide faculty, administrative leadership and program decision-making that both honor equity and diversity and protect educational rigor and professional integrity.
Delivering high-resolution landmarks using inkjet micropatterning for spatial monitoring of leaf expansion

Plant Methods , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1746-4811-7-1
Abstract: To monitor leaf expansion in two dimensions, at very fine scales, we used a custom designed inkjet micropatterning system to print a grid composed of c. 0.19 mm2 cells on small developing leaves of ivy (Hedera helix) using 40 μm dots at a spacing of c. 91 μm. The leaves in different growing stages were imaged under magnification to extract the coordinates of the marks which were then used in subsequent computer-assisted leaf expansion analyses. As an example we obtained quantified global and local expansion information and created expansion maps over the entire leaf surface. The results reveal a striking pattern of fine-scale expansion differences over short periods of time. In these experiments, the base of the leaf is a "cold spot" for expansion, while the leaf sinuses are "hot spots" for expansion. We have also measured a strong shading effect on leaf expansion. We discuss the features required to build an inkjet printing apparatus optimized for use in plant science, which will further maximize the range of tissues that can be printed at these scales. To apply inkjet micropatterning to plant studies, we have successfully delivered landmarks on ivy leaf surfaces and achieved high-resolution, two-dimensional monitoring of leaf expansion at different growing stages. The measurement is capable of reliably identifying the fine scale changes during plant growth. As well as delivering landmarks, this technology may be used to deliver microscale targeted biological components such as growth hormones, and possibly be used to pattern sensors directly on the leaves.Inkjet printing is a technique involving ejecting tiny liquid droplets in a non-contact manner onto target object surfaces to form any desired patterns in high resolution. Historically, it has been used almost exclusively for document and image printing, finding considerable success in the consumer electronics market. More recently the potential of this technology has been explored to a greater degree, especially
