BMC Psychiatry , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-244x-11-90
Abstract: An anonymous survey was carried out at a methadone program in Baltimore, MD, and all patients were invited to participate through group meetings and fliers around the clinic on a voluntary basis. Of the 205 returned questionnaires, 194 were complete and entered into final data analysis. Those who completed the questionnaire were offered a $5 gift card as an appreciation.47% of the respondents had a history of BZD use, and 39.8% used BZD without a prescription. Half of the BZD users (54%) started using BZD after entering the methadone program, and 61% of previous BZD users reported increased or resumed use after entering methadone program. Compared to the non-users, BZD users were more likely to be White, have prescribed medication for mental problems, have preexistent anxiety problems before opiate use, and had anxiety problems before entering methadone program. They reported more mental health problems in the past month, and had higher scores in anxiety state, depression and perceived stress (p < .05).Important information on epidemiology of BZD misuse among methadone-maintenance patients suggests that most methadone programs do not address co-occurring anxiety problems, and methadone treatment may trigger onset or worsening of BZD misuse. Further study is needed to explore how to curb misuse and abuse of BZD in the addiction population, and provide effective treatments targeting simultaneously addiction symptoms, anxiety disorders and BZD misuse.Benzodiazepines (BZD) misuse and abuse is a serious public health problem in the United States. This problem is especially pertinent among those with opiate dependence [1] because these individuals are more likely to experience elevated anxiety after stopping use of opiates, with increased risk of using BZD as an anxiety coping strategy [2]. In addition, it has been shown that individuals who abuse BZD are at increased risk of continuing opiate abuse [3]and failing to stay in methadone treatment [4,5]. BZD use has also bee

The Profitability of Residential Photovoltaic Systems. A New Scheme of Subsidies Based on the Price of CO2 in a Developed PV Market

- , 2018, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/socsci7090148
Abstract: Abstract Photovoltaic (PV) resource drives the clean global economy of the future. Its sustainability is widely confirmed in literature, however some countries present a growth very low in the last years. A new policy proposal is examined in this work. It aims to stimulate a new diffusion of PV plants in mature markets (e.g., Italy) regarding residential consumers. The subsidy is given to the amount of energy produced by PV plant for a period of 20 years (equal to its lifetime) and its value is calculated according to the scheme of European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) is used as economic method and two indexes are proposed: Net Present Value (NPV) and Discounted Payback Time (DPBT). The baseline case studies vary in function of two variables; (i) the share of self-consumption (30%, 40% and 50%) and (ii) the price of emissions avoided (10, 35 and 70 € per ton of CO 2eq). Results confirms the environmental advantages of PV sources as alternative to the use of fossil fuels (685 gCO 2eq/kWh) and economic opportunities are verified in several scenarios (from 48 €/kW to 1357 €/kW). In particular, the profitability of PV systems is greater with a subsidized rate of fiscal deduction of 50% in comparison to subsidies with a value of carbon dioxide lower than 18.50 €/tCO 2eq. Abstract: Dietary intake and higher serum concentrations of lycopene have been associated with lower incidence of prostate cancer and other chronic diseases. Identifying determinants of serum lycopene concentrations may thus have important public health implications. Prior studies have suggested that serum lycopene concentrations are under partial genetic control. The goal of this research was to identify genetic predictors of serum lycopene concentrations using the genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach among a sample of 441 Old Order Amish adults that consumed a controlled diet. Linear regression models were utilized to evaluate associations between genetic variants and serum concentrations of lycopene. Variant rs7680948 on chromosome 4, located in the intron region of the SETD7 gene, was significantly associated with serum lycopene concentrations (p = 3.41 × 10?9). Our findings also provided nominal support for the association previously noted between SCARB1 and serum lycopene concentrations, although with a different SNP (rs11057841) in the region. This study identified a novel locus associated with serum lycopene concentrations and our results raise a number of intriguing possibilities regarding the nature of the relationship between SETD7 and lycopene, both of which have been independently associated with prostate cancer. Further investigation into this relationship might help provide greater mechanistic understanding of these associations
Summertime winds and direct cyclonic circulation: observations from Lake Geneva
U. Lemmin,N. D'Adamo
Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO) , 2003,
Abstract: Records of wind, air temperature and air pressure from nine stations, situated along the shoreline of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, were analyzed for the summer period May to September. At all stations the consistent appearance of significant spectral peaks and changes in wind direction at the diurnal frequency indicates the importance of lake-land breezes. It is shown that the surrounding topography has a strong modifying effect (temporal and spatial) on the lake-land breeze. Superimposed on this cyclic wind pattern, short episodes of strong winds with long fetch over parts of Lake Geneva are regularly observed. Both of these winds exert a spatially variable wind stress over the lake surface on the same time scale. Typical examples of the expected lake's response are presented, among them the seasonally persistent gyre in the central part of the lake. Evidence is provided that this dominant circulation is part of a direct cyclonic circulation, generated by the curl of the diurnal wind field. It is concluded that the mean circulation is caused by these winds and affected by the topography of the surrounding land.
Crystalline free energies of micelles of diblock copolymer solutions

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1063/1.3509391
Abstract: We report a characterization of the relative stability and structural behavior of various micellar crystals of an athermal model of AB-diblock copolymers in solution. We adopt a previously devel- oped coarse-graining representation of the chains which maps each copolymer on a soft dumbbell. Thanks to this strong reduction of degrees of freedom, we are able to investigate large aggregated systems, and for a specific length ratio of the blocks f = MA/(MA + MB) = 0.6, to locate the order-disorder transition of the system of micelles. Above the transition, mechanical and thermal properties are found to depend on the number of particles per lattice site in the simulation box, and the application of a recent methodology for multiple occupancy crystals (B.M. Mladek et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 235702 (2007)) is necessary to correctly define the equilibrium state. Within this scheme we have performed free energy calculations at two reduced density {\rho}/{\rho}\ast = 4,5 and for several cubic structures as FCC,BCC,A15. At both densities, the BCC symmetry is found to correspond to the minimum of the unconstrained free energy, that is to the stable symmetry among the few considered, while the A15 structure is almost degenerate, indicating that the present sys- tem prefers to crystallize in less packed structures. At {\rho}/{\rho}\ast = 4 close to melting, the Lindemann ratio is fairly high (~ 0.29) and the concentration of vacancies is roughly 6%. At {\rho}/{\rho}\ast = 5 the mechanical stability of the stable BCC structure increases and the concentration of vacancies ac- cordingly decreases. The ratio of the corona layer thickness to the core radius is found to be in good agreement with experimental data for poly(styrene-b-isoprene)(22-12) in isoprene selective solvent which is also reported to crystallize in the BCC structure.

The aim of this paper is to analyze citizen's perceptions concerning the role of mass media during presidencial elections. First, some issues related to the actual importance of mass media in electoral campaigns, the main features of mass mediated political communication, and its effects on voting behavior, are explored. Second, the results of an opinion poll on public perception of the argentinean mass media during the presidencial campaign for the 2007 election are presented. Last, we discuss some possible consequences of the formats used by mass media to communicate electoral information, and also two effects propiciated by them (agenda-setting and framing).
Age differences in virtual environment and real world path integration
Diane E. Adamo,Scott D. Moffat
Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fnagi.2012.00026
Abstract: Accurate path integration (PI) requires the integration of visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular self-motion cues and age effects associated with alterations in processing information from these systems may contribute to declines in PI abilities. The present study investigated age-related differences in PI in conditions that varied as a function of available sources of sensory information. Twenty-two healthy, young (23.8 ± 3.0 years) and 16 older (70.1 ± 6.4 years) adults participated in distance reproduction and triangle completion tasks (TCTs) performed in a virtual environment (VE) and two “real world” conditions: guided walking and wheelchair propulsion. For walking and wheelchair propulsion conditions, participants wore a blindfold and wore noise-blocking headphones and were guided through the workspace by the experimenter. For the VE condition, participants viewed self-motion information on a computer monitor and used a joystick to navigate through the environment. For TCTs, older compared to younger individuals showed greater errors in rotation estimations performed in the wheelchair condition, and for rotation and distance estimations in the VE condition. Distance reproduction tasks (DRTs), in contrast, did not show any age effects. These findings demonstrate that age differences in PI vary as a function of the available sources of information and by the complexity of outbound pathway.
Polymers as compressible soft spheres

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1063/1.4728338
Abstract: We consider a coarse-grained model in which polymers under good-solvent conditions are represented by soft spheres whose radii, which should be identified with the polymer radii of gyrations, are allowed to fluctuate. The corresponding pair potential depends on the sphere radii. This model is a single-sphere version of the one proposed in Vettorel et al., Soft Matter 6, 2282 (2010), and it is sufficiently simple to allow us to determine all potentials accurately from full-monomer simulations of two isolated polymers (zero-density potentials). We find that in the dilute regime (which is the expected validity range of single-sphere coarse-grained models based on zero-density potentials) this model correctly reproduces the density dependence of the radius of gyration. However, for the thermodynamics and the intermolecular structure, the model is largely equivalent to the simpler one in which the sphere radii are fixed to the average value of the radius of gyration and radiiindependent potentials are used: for the thermodynamics there is no advantage in considering a fluctuating sphere size.
