Characterization of a MEMS BioChip for planar patch-clamp recording

Santosh Pandey, Mehrotra, R. Wykosky, S. White, M.H.
We describe a planar MEMS silicon structure to record ion channel currents in biological cells. The conventional method of performing an electrophysiological experiment, 'patch-clamping', employs a glass micropipette. The micropipette tip is a source of thermal noise because of its inherent, tapered, conical structure, giving rise to a large pipette resistance. This pipette resistance, when coupled with the biological cell capacitance, limits the available bandwidth of single ion channel recordi...

Effective drug combination for Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes discovered by output-driven feedback system control technique

Ding, X. Njus, Z. Kong, T. Su, W. Ho, C.-M. Pandey, S.
Infections from parasitic nematodes (or roundworms) contribute to a significant disease burden and productivity losses for humans and livestock. The limited number of anthelmintics (or antinematode drugs) available today to treat these infections are rapidly losing their efficacy as multidrug resistance in parasites becomes a global health challenge. We propose an engineering approach to discover an anthelmintic drug combination that is more potent at killing wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans wor...

Amplitude modulated sinusoidal microchannels for observing adaptability in C. elegans locomotion

Parashar, A. Lycke, R. Carr, J.A. Pandey, Santosh
In this paper, we present a movement-based assay to observe adaptability in Caenorhabditis elegans locomotion behavior. The assay comprises a series of sinusoidal microchannels with a fixed wavelength and modulating (increasing or decreasing) amplitude. The channel width is comparable to the body diameter of the organism. Worms are allowed to enter the channel from the input port and migrate toward the output port. Within channel sections that closely match the worm's natural undulations, the wo...

Comparative study of foliar application of various beer products and sakkara brewing on plant growth, flowering and fruit setting of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) plants

Shyamalee Kohombange, R. G. A. S. Rajapaksha, Nandun Rathnasekara, H. G. Gunathilaka, M. M. S. P. Munasingha
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is an important vegetable crop in the tropics. Beer brewing is an intricate process encompassing mixing and further elaboration of four essential raw materials. “Sakkara”, Sri Lankan name for jiggery made by sugar cane stem extract. Sakkara Brewing (SBr) is also an intricate process like beer. It has reported that foliar application of beer and SBr resulted in significant growth stimulation in plants. The objectives of the present study were to compare the effects of f...

Impact of municipal solid waste on groundwater quality in Jhang City Punjab, Pakistan

Taswar Abbas, Muhammad Fahad Ullah, Omar Riaz, Tariq Shehzad
The current study was carried out to investigate the impact of solid waste dumping sites on ground water quality in Jhang city, Pakistan. In order to investigate the solid waste disposal effects on ground water quality, the study area has been divided into two parts i.e solid waste sites and controlled area. Ground water is the major source of drinking water in study area. Therefore, water samples have been collected near and surrounding the municipal solid waste dumping sites and analyzed for v...

Civilization besides its major advantages (undisputed) brought us some unhealthy habits which unfortunately have managed to penetrate deeply within several generations on the current planetary populations producing great damages to its health. Perhaps it would be the right time to and more people learning to live healthy, to feed ourselves healthy, let's try to break the chain of evil which we grind all already several generations. It has been shown that residual free radicals in the body are re...

ESTIMATION OF HERITABILITY AND GENETIC ADVANCE FOR VARIOUS METRIC TRAITS IN SEVEN F2 POPULATIONS OF BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.)

Babar Saleem, Abdus Salam Khan, Muhammad Talha Shahzad*, and Fahid Ijaz
Heritability estimates provide information about the traits that are transmitted from parents to their offsprings and it has a crucial role in selection criteria to improve grain yield. The purpose of the present study was to compute heritability and genetic advance of seven F2 populations derived through cross combinations of five parental varieties/lines of bread wheat Iqbal-2000, Lasani- 2008, 9444, 9432 and 9436. Data were recorded for seven metric traits: plant height, days to heading, flag...

Antioxidant and other biochemical defense responses of Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (Horse gram) induced by high temperature and salt stress

Khalid Mohammed Naji, V R Devaraj
High temperature and salinity are the major ecological factors challenging crop productivity in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Effects of high temperature (43-45°C) and salt stress (0.6 M) on Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (Horse gram), were evaluated in terms of antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes. Both treatments caused typical stress responses in this tropical leguminosae. Oxidative stress indicators such as H2O2, TBARS, and proline were significantly elevated. Similarly, t...
