A Study of Variations in Coronary Arterial System in Cadaveric Human Heart

Knowledge of the normal and variant anatomy is an important component in the management of congenital and acquired heart disease. A Sixty heart specimens were obtained from Department of Anatomy and studied. The observations were made with respect to the site of origin, distance from supravalvar ridge, length and diameter of the vascular segments. The branching pattern, dominance of the artery was also noted. The variations of the arteries were noted. The present study showed that, ostium diameter of left coronary artery is larger than the right coronary artery. The outer diameter of the left coronary artery is larger than the right coronary artery. In few of the specimens (16.3%) the ostium of right coronary artery was at the supravalvar ridge and in 6.33% of the cases-the ostium of left coronary artery was at the supravalvar ridge. In 3.31% of the cases the ostium of left coronary artery was 2 mm above supravalvar ridge.
