Online education has been used for various purposes in higher education, two examples being the improvement of performance over time and the elucidation of professional development within the context of education and e-learning. Based on the results of online faculty training courses at five Spanish universities, this article explores the learning by teaching and research personnel (TRP) through the faculty development theory. This theoretical approach emphasises, firstly, the context of ensured university quality and, secondly, offers a theoretical analysis of the ways in which university faculty use curriculum and teaching capacities (CTC) for learning within an online faculty development programme. This analysis centres on the idea that faculty comprehend and respond to quality teaching principles. Finally, this study sheds light on those issues considered to be most important when designing, developing and evaluating training courses via the Internet.
