Visibility and (in)visibility, dissolutions and traces of presence in the Mexican territory Visibilidad e (in)visibilidad, disoluciones e indicios de presencia en territorio mexicano

There is an image of catastrophe in every day Mexico, a contemporary catastrophe that alludes to the visible and the (in)visible. This paper shows a complex network of connections between these possibilities: visibility and (in)visibility, memory and absence, through the works of two Mexican artists from Culiacan, Sinaloa: Fernando Brito with Tus pasos se perdieron con el paisaje (2010) (Your steps were lost with the landscape) and Teresa Margolles with Vaporización (2002) (Vaporization). These artists are shown as producers and regents of memory, happening and resisting oblivion in a present reconstructed through the realm of art; and how these creators mark an aesthetic and intellectual territory against the background of violence and death in the Mexican territory. It thus displays these two works that investigate the premise of commemoration with the intention of preserving memory from a new critical standpoint. Hay una imagen de la catástrofe en los días de México, una catástrofe contemporánea que alude a lo visible y a lo (in)visible. Este trabajo muestra una red compleja de conexiones entre estas posibilidades: visibilidad e invisibilidad, memoria y ausencia, a partir del trabajo de dos artistas mexicanos de Culiacán, Sinaloa: Fernando Brito con Tus pasos se perdieron en el paisaje (2010) y Teresa Margolles con Vaporización (2002). Expone a estos artistas como productores y regentes de memoria, aconteciendo y resistiendo al olvido en un presente reconstruido gracias a la esfera artística. Y cómo estos creadores marcan un territorio estético y de pensamiento ante situaciones de violencia y muerte dentro del territorio mexicano. Despliega, así, a este par de obras que indagan en la premisa de la conmemoración con la intención de preservar el recuerdo desde un nuevo punto de vista crítico.
