OVERVIEW OF A NATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR IN TURKEY FROM THE FOCUS ON ADMINISTRATORS’, TEACHERS’, STUDENTS’ VIEWS AND QUALITY OF SCIENCE PROJECTS

Abstract:

This study, called ‘’This is My Work’’ about the science and mathematics project science fair for elementary school students in Turkey and investigated from perspectives of administrator, teacher and students about engaging motivations, difficulties, increasing of involving and productivity, mentorship role, contributing of science education, collaboration with corporation and institutes at project preparing process and quality of science projects, is qualitative study. This study was conducted at 2009-2010 educational term, and its participants were students engaging from A city to B Regional Fair and their administrators and teachers. Semi-structured interviews, observations, projects reports, attitudinal survey used as collecting data tools. Results from data analysis; engaging motivations of administrators that school reputation,for teachers’ pressure of administrator and student willingness, for students presenting project. Although teachers had positive attitude towards science fair, they stated that ‘’If my district did not require participation, I would not involve my students in science fair competitions’’ mostly. Administrators, teachers and student mostly stated that mentors or parents had more effective role in project makingprocess. Findings about qualitative quality of projects were determined serious mistakes at using scientific method, data analysis and searching resource domain by experts. Teachers, having key role at science fairs, should be given importance their training, if it is wanted to achieve the science fairs’ aims. Moreover, the dimension of ethics and moral education at science fair should not be ignored
