The New Discovery of Peculiar Skeleton Fossils from the Uppermost Neoproterozoic Strata in South Shaanxi and Its Significance
|
Abstract:
Apart from the tubular skeleton fossils such as Cloudina and Sinotubulites, a diversity of peculiar microskeleton fossils was found from the residue of carbonate rocks in upper Gaojiashan Member of the Neoproterozoic Dengying Formation in Ningjiang County, Shaanxi Province. It is thought that some fossils might have affinity with the Early Cambrian small shelly fossils, such as the strange rivet like fossils and possible gastropoda like fossils, presumably indicating the coherence of biota across the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary. It is probable that some may be biomineralized metaphyte (with various kinds of branching style) and blue green algae, resulting from an extensive biomineralization event at the end of Neoproterozoic. It is also conceivable that various globular fossils within this fossil assemblage may contribute greatly to the study of the origin and the early evolution of metazoa.
