Macroeconomic fluctuations and bank behavior in Chile

Revista de Análisis Económico (RAE) , 2008,
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze bank behavior in Chile over time, looking at how their balance sheets and performance move both in the short and long run, and how they react to macroeconomic shocks. The evolution of banking aggregates over an 18 year period (1989-2006), using quarterly data is examined. Techniques common in the real business cycle literature are applied to establish empirical patterns. Robustness tests using several filters are performed. The effects of macro shocks on banking variables are analyzed, both by means of an event study, and by estimating impulse responses with VARs. The results show that credit lags the cycle, demand deposits lead it, both being procyclical, while the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) is countercyclical. In addition, a shock to interest rates reduces loans (total, commercial, consumption), and increases non performing loans (NPL) and the capital adequacy ratio (CAR). A shock to GDP growth has a positive effect on loans, return over equity (ROE), and a negative impact on NPL and CAR.

Abstract: The Neuroscience of Personality is a research area of recent development. Its aim is to understand the structure and functioning of personality from current developments in neuroscience. At present, it has been able to establish meaningful relationships between different personality factors and some cognitive processes and neuropsychological functioning in clinically normal population. This research aimed to evaluate the correlations between normal childhood personality and immediate auditory memory in a group of school children with normal academic performance. We evaluated a group of 36 children aged between 6 and 8 years without a history of neurological disease, psychiatric or neuropsychological or congenital or acquired brain injury, and no family history of neurological or psychiatric disease. We performed a statistical analysis of correlations and the degrees of correlations established between the three types of immediate auditory memory and each of the 13 personality factors in children. The correlations that were significant at p < 0.05, R Pearson, corresponded to those presented between factor B (Intelligence low-high) and logical memory (371), the factor C (Emotion unstable-stable) and associative memory (- .400), and factor G (Unconcerned –Conscious) and digital storage (366). The correlation analysis results are discussed from theoretical and conceptual proposals in cognitive psychology and neuroscience.

Abstract: giant cell myocarditis is an infrequent and serious illness, possibly of autoimmune etiology, characterized by the presence of multinucleated giant cells with inflammatory infiltrate and extensive necrosis in the endomyocardial biopsy. its association with ventricular tachycardia is common and alterations in atrioventricular conduction are frequently solved through immunosuppressive treatment. given the generally complex prognosis of this entity, the role of the resynchronization devices after the heart failure stabilization, is unclear. we reported a case in which the implant of one of these devices was a fundamental part of the therapy and patient recovery.

Abstract: the presence of the pse (pale, soft and exudative) condition in porcine carcass causes high economic losses to the meat industry. the pse appearance depends on many variables, some of which are intrinsic of the animal, and others are related to transportation conditions to the slaughterhouse. the aim of the present study was to determine if there is or not an association between some of the above mentioned variables and the pse condition. the studied variables were: genetic, sex, food, weight, time of fasting, time of transportation, density, temperature and humidity during transportation, type of truck, resting time, dorsal fat, carcass efficiency and carcass weight losses. carcasses of commercial genetic pigs (n = 474) were tested and semimembranous muscle ph was done at 45 minutes (ph45 ) and then at 24 h post-sacrifice, using iq 200 scientific instruments?, with an isfet? type probe. test of principal components of glm with contrast test of tukey with 95% of significance, and univariate and divariate frequencies distribution was applied. the results demonstrate that there was highly significant association (p<0.01) between ph45 and variables as density, food, type of truck, genetic and the resting time. the sex and the time of transportation also had significant association (p<0.05), but only with ph45 . additionally, differences between genetic, sex (highest values of ph45 to males) and food (p<0.05) were found. also, there were interactions between: sex - fasting, sex - food, sex - resting and sex - transportation (p<0.05). according to the results, pse condition is not a unicausal phenomenon and consequently it needs an integral managment.

Abstract: the pse (pale, soft and exudative) meat condition alters the color, the texture and the flavor of pork, increasing its acidity and occasioning low water retention, low nutritional level and rejection by the consumer. to determine the presence of the pse characteristic, the pork carcasses are evaluated by ph measurements at 45 minutes (ph45) and 24 hours (ph24 after the slaughter of the pigs. the mean ph45 values indicate that 33.65% of the carcasses present the pse condition, 47.12% are normal and 19.23 % can be described as dfd (dark, firm and dry). the ph24 values indicate an increase in the pse carcasses up to 68% while the normal and dfd ones decrease to 31.23 % and 0.77%, respectively. comparing the change of the meat characteristics from 45 min to 24 hours, after the pig slaughter , it is observed that 62.44% of the normal meat and 87% of dfd one become pse meat and 94.85% of the initial pse one does not suffer any transformation. the pork carcasses present high incidence of the pse characteristics at 45 minutes as well as 24 hours, indicating that there is problems before and after the slaughter of the pigs. high statistically significant difference (p < 0.01) is found for the three meat conditions evaluated at ph45 and ph24.
