Abstract: the main objective of this study was to validate the functional social support questionnaire (duke-unc-11) in a sample of 67 persons living with hiv from the northwest region of mexico. data analysis was carried out by the following procedures in a consecutive order: the t-test for means comparison to assess the comprehensibil-ity of the questions; an exploratory factorial analysis with varimax rotation, to determine construct validity; the cronbach's á coefficient to estimate reliability. the t-test gave statistical significance values of p = .000 in the total of the questions; a one-factor structure was found with the exploratory factorial analysis with varimax rotation, with eigenvalue of 6.486, explaining 58.6% of the total variance; finally, an overall cronbach's á coefficient of .92 was obtained with the test of reliability. the results of the factorial structure of this study are compared with those reported in other studies realized in hispanic countries
