Abstract:

Objective: To explore the role of personality traits in influencing college students’ BMI and body shape related factors, and to provide scientific basis for improving college students’ body shape health. Methods: In June 2024, 272 college students aged between 18 and 23 years old from a university in Hangzhou were recruited. Self-reported questionnaires and physiological measurements were used to collect data. Results: Correlation analysis showed that agreeableness and openness were significantly negatively correlated with BMI (both P < 0.05). Agreeableness was significantly positively correlated with BMI body type (P < 0.05). Extraversion and neuroticism significantly affected body image (all P < 0.01). Openness was significantly negatively correlated with WHtR in male group (P < 0.01). Personality traits significantly predicted BMI and body type of male college students (both P < 0.05), but significantly predicted body image of female college students (P < 0.01). Conclusion: There is a correlation between the big five personality traits and the physical health data of college students. The regression analysis shows a certain predictive power, which can provide personalized health management plans for students with different personality traits.
