The Contradiction between Ideal and Reality in “Middlemarch”—A Case Study of Dorothea and Lidgate

《米德尔马契》中的两位主人公多萝西娅和利德盖特是19世纪英国女作家乔治？爱略特笔下富有理想的人物，他们在米德尔马契这个地方渴望实现自己的理想，过上自己想要的生活，但失败的婚姻、社会俗见等现实因素使他们的理想最终破灭。理想与现实的矛盾存在于多萝西娅和利德盖特的身上，同样也存在于庞大的维多利亚时代的社会之中，而在这两重矛盾的背后也存在着更为深层次的原因。
Dorothea and Lidgate, the two heroes in Middlemarch, are ideal characters in the works of George Eliot, a 19th-century British writer. They are eager to realize their ideals and live the life they want in Middlemarch, but their ideals are finally destroyed by such realistic factors as failed marriage and social stereotypes. The contradiction between ideal and reality exists in Dorothea and Lidgate, as well as in the huge Victorian society, and there are deeper reasons behind the two contradictions.
