|
Abstract:
John Updike tries to focus on the transformation of Ahmad, a young member of marginalized ethnic minority, from a good student to a potential terrorist from the perspective of the Other, i.e. American Islam, in his novel Terrorist. Through the depiction of Ahmad’s change of mind from conflicts, crisis to redemption, Updike analyzes the underlying causes of 9?11 terrorist attack and explores the ways to solve the conflicts. The novel’s unpopularity in the USA proves the difficulty of mediating cross-cultural conflicts.
