QUARANTINE STATIONS IN THE BLACK SEA IN 1849 ACCORDING TO FRENCH EPIDEMIOLOGIST ANTOINE FAUVEL

The first practice of quarantine in the Ottoman Empire started in 1831 in Istanbul after the establishment of institutionalization to protect public health in the capital, quarantine administrations were founded in many places throughout Anatolia. However, these institutions were closed when plague and cholera disappeared, and only coastal quarantine administrations were kept active and others were abolished. But there were many drawbacks in the operation of these coastal quarantines. The most important task of the Quarantine Council started in 1838 was to monitor the efficiency of these quarantine stations. In this context, Antoine Fauvel, a French delegate in this council by February 1849, prepared a report after his examination with the Austrian Health Commission, which was accountable for supervising the quarantine within the borders of the Ottoman Empire. This report presents significant information about these deficiencies.
