On the Origin and Meaning of Illustrations Accompanying the Fourth Edition of Maruli？’s Judita

Sa？etak The paper discusses the iconography of woodcut illustrations in the fourth (and the last illustrated) edition of Marko Maruli？’s Judita, published by Marco Bindoni in Venice in 1586. The choice of illustrative material from a literary work thematically related to the Christian-Muslim conflict, with allusions to contemporary political issues in the context of anti-Ottoman events, raises questions regarding the interpretation and reception of Maruli？’s Judita, as to whether the visual narrative was determined by the possible perception (reading) of the poem, or its visual narrative shaped the reception of the literary work itself
