《红楼梦》中“水”概念隐喻及英译策略

Abstract:

此论文旨在揭示《红楼梦》中有关“水”的概念隐喻,研究发现书中主要有四个有关“水”的概念隐喻,即[人体是水],[状态是水],[具有水特征的物体/现象是水],[功能是水]。其中人体,尤其是女性及其眼睛、性格和情感是“水”最频繁的翻译目标域。其对隐喻的翻译可归分三种不同的翻译策略:省略喻体,调整喻体和直译喻体。汉语隐喻多使用一些复合词来修饰“水”这个中心语。比如“顺水”,“秋水”,“水性”等。而在英文语料中,高频词多为一些结构词来构成相关的隐喻。
This paper aims to reveal the conceptual metaphor of “water” in A Dream in Red Mansions. Four conceptual metaphors of “water” are found in this research, namely, HUMAN BODY IS WATER, STATE IS WATER, OBJECT/PHENOMENON WITH FEATURES OF WATER IS WATER and FUNCTION IS WATER. Human body, especially women and their eyes, character and emotion are the most frequent target domain of “water”. The translation strategy of conceptual metaphor can be divided into three different kinds: omitting the vehicle, adjusting the vehicle and translating the vehicle. In Chinese metaphor, some compound words are often used to modify the central word “water”, for example, “Shun Shui”, “Qiu Shui”, “Shui Xing” and so on. In English corpus, structural words are frequently used to form relevant metaphors.
