Abstract:

Objective To investigate the effects of vitamin D on postpartum mood and athletic performance in mice. Methods Vitamin D was given to postpartum mice for 14 weeks, with a normal dose (n=27,1000IU/kg), deficient dose (n=25,0IU/kg) or overdose (n=22,0000IU/kg). The maternal depressive-like behaviors was examined by using tail suspension test (TST), forced swim test (FST), dark-light box (DLB), open field and rotarod for 10 weeks. Results Vitamin D had little effect on the athletic activity with open field and rotarod tests. Dark-light box revealed that there was no effect of vitamin D on the anxiety. In addition, tail suspension and forced swim tests indicated that vitamin D had no effect on postpartum depression. Conclusion Vitamin D shows no persistent effect on athletic activity and postpartum mood in mice
