mid-latitudeatmosphericresponsestoheatandvorticityforcingusingalinearbaroclinicmodelDOI: 10.3969/2013jms.0060, PP. 149-161 Keywords: diabatic,heating,transient,eddy,heating,transient,eddy,vorticity,forcing,linear,baroclinic,model Abstract: basedondiagnosticanalysisofreanalysisdatafor58-year,thedistributioncharacteristicsofdecadalvariabilityindiabaticheating,transienteddyheatingandtransienteddyvorticityforcingrelatedtotheseasurfacetemperature(sst)anomaliesoverthenorthpacific,aswellastheirrelationshipwithanomalousatmosphericcirculationhavebeeninvestigatedinthispaper.alinearbaroclinicmodel(lbm)wasusedtoinvestigateatmosphericresponsestoidealizedandrealisticheatandvorticityforcinganomalies,andthentocomparerelativerolesofdifferentkindsofforcingintermsofgeopotentialheightresponses.theresultsillustratethattheresponsesofatmosphericheightfieldstothemid-latitudeheatingcanbeeitherbaroclinicorbarotropic.theresponsestructureissensitivetotherelativehorizontallocationofheatingwithrespecttothebackgroundjetflow,aswellastotheverticalprofileofheating.theresponsetotheidealizeddeepheatingovertheeasternnorthpacific,mimickingtheobservedheatinganomaly,isbaroclinic.theatmosphericresponsetothemid-latitudevorticityforcingisalwaysbarotropic,resultinginageopotentiallowthatisinphasewiththeforcing.theatmosphericresponsestotherealisticheatandvorticityforcingshowthesimilarresults,suggestingthatdiabaticheating,transienteddyheatingandtransienteddyvorticityforcingcanallcauseatmosphericanomaliesandthatthevorticityforcingplaysarelativelymoreimportantroleinmaintainingtheequivalent-barotropicstructureofgeopotentialheightanomalies.
