evaluatingfileformatsforlong-termpreservationKeywords: fileformatsassessment,long-termpreservation,quantifiablefileformatevaluation Abstract: ？？nationalandinternationalpublishershavebeendepositingdigitalpublicationsatthenationallibraryofthenetherlands(kb)since2003.untilrecently,mostofthesepublicationsweredepositedintheportabledocumentformat.newprojects,forexamplethewebarchivingproject,forcethekbtohandlemoreheterogeneousmaterial.therefore,thekbhasdevelopedaquantifiablefileformatriskassessmentmethod.thismethodcanbeusedtodefinedigitalpreservationstrategiesforspecificfileformats.thechoiceforaspecificfileformatatcreationtimeorlaterinthelifecycleofadigitalobjectinfluencesthelong-termaccesstothedigitalobject.theevaluationmethodcontainssevensustainabilitycriteriaforfileformatsthatareweighedforimportance.thereseemstobeconsensusonthesustainabilitycriteria.however,astheweighingofthesecriteriaisconnectedtoaninstitution’spolicy,thekbwonderswhetheragreementontherelativeimportanceofthecriteriacanbereachedatall.withthispaper,thekbhopestoinspireotherculturalheritageinstitutionstodefinetheirownquantifiablefileformatevaluationmethod.
