Abstract:

?Anassessmentisofferedregardingtheprogressmade,andtheremainingchallenges,inthefieldofcarbocatalysis.Thefundamentalprinciplesthatgovernthepreparationandperformanceofsp2-hybridizedcarbonmaterialsinheterogeneouscatalysishavebeenknownfordecades,andthelevelofunderstandingofkeyissues-especiallytheimportanceoftexturalandion-exchangeproperties(i.e.,surfacearea,poresizedistribution,andprotontransfer)-remainsquitesatisfactory.Theopportunitiesfornovelcatalyticmaterials-especiallygraphenenanosheetsandcarbonnanotubes-aretremendous,especiallywhenitcomestotakingadvantageoftheirstructuralorder,suchthatelectrontransfercanbebothbetterunderstoodandcontrolledtoenhancecatalyticactivityandselectivity.
