Abstract:

?ANi-Znbinarymetalcoatingwaselectrochemicallydepositedonacopperelectrodethatwascoatedwithnickel(bottomlayer).Thiswasthenetchedinconcentratedalkalinesolution(30wt%NaOH)toproduceananoporousNielectrocatalyticsurfaceforborohydrideelectro-oxidationinalkalinesolution.ThebulkandsurfacecompositionsofthecoatingbeforeandafteralkalineleachingweredeterminedbyatomicabsorptionspectroscopyandenergydispersiveX-rayanalysis.Thesurfacemorphologywasinvestigatedbyscanningelectronmicroscopy.ThecharacterizationshowedthattheleachedNi/Zn-Nicoatinghasananoporousstructure.Electrocatalyticactivityforborohydrideelectro-oxidationwasassessedbycyclicvoltammetryandelectrochemicalimpedancespectroscopy.Theimprovedactivityoftheelectrodewasrelatedtotheremovalofcorrosionproductsandtheformationofnanoporesandcracksduringalkalineleaching.CyclicvoltammetrystudiesconfirmedthatthealkalineleachingprocessimprovedtheactivityoftheNi/Zn-NicoatingincomparisontothatofasmoothNideposit,anditgaveananodicpeakcurrentdensitythatwas21timeshigher.
