Abstract:

?Inthisstudy,alumina,zirconia,manganeseoxide/alumina,andmanganeseoxide/zirconiahavebeeninvestigatedfortheircatalyticactivityinthecondensationreactionbetweeno-phenylenediamineandanaldehydeoraketonetosynthesise2-substitutedbenzimidazolesand1,5-disubstitutedbenzodiazepinesrespectively.Surfacearea,surfaceacidity,andmorphologyofthecatalystshavebeenanalysedandcorrelatedwiththeircatalyticactivity.Theisolatedyieldsof2-substitutedbenzimidazolesand1,5-disubstitutedbenzodiazepinesareintherangeof30%to95%.Agoodcorrelationbetweentheamountofsurfaceacidsitesaswellasthesurfacemorphologyofthecatalystsandthecatalyticactivityhasbeenobserved.Thismethodhasbeenfoundtobesimpleandeconomical.Thesolidsupportscouldberegeneratedandreusedwithoutmuchlossintheiractivity.Further,thesolidsupportshavebeenalsofoundtobeeffectiveasgeneralcatalystsinthecondensationofo-phenylenediaminewithothersubstitutedaldehydesandketones.
