Abstract:

The á í, called §ash ¨ and í, called §schwa ¨ are very frequent phonemes inEnglish language that confuse the Turkish teachers of English. The main reason for thisconfusion is that both of them do not exist in modern standard Turkish. Another reasonis the reduction of á í into í in word formation process with the accompaniment ofthe change of primary stress to another syllable. For example, milk ma °n, post ma °n, andgate ma °n are phrases by nature, but in a process of compounding they take themorphological form of milkma tn, po °stma tn, and ga °tema tn through a phonological decayof the / á/ phoneme into / / phoneme with the reduction of the primary stress of the freeword ma °n into the weak stress form like -ma tn, relegating it into the position of a boundmorpheme. This article, through a model lesson plan, will explore such sound changesthat confuse the Turkish English teachers.
