FACTORS INVOLVED IN THE MIGRATION OF TOTONAC INDIGENOUS FROM VERACRUZ

Abstract:

This paper deals with the social vulnerability of Totonacs Indians in the State of Veracruz. Contemporary Indians are suffering the current production and development model related to poverty and insecurity. The text also studies collective answers from the people to vulnerability. The minimal analysis unit is the domestic family which is composed by men, their kinship and social relations, and also by their social resources and abilities. Totonacs have an agricultural ancient culture which is tied to market fluctuations; new adjustments to the market situation have been developed. To the end of 1980’s Totonacs Indian grew coffee but grain coffee prices decreased and the suffered by insecurity and poverty; as a result of this situation migration appeared to be the answer, and they starting looking for seasonal jobs in masonry. A migration to Mexico and Puebla cities started changing the life of migrants and their families.
