Summary of the results of an educational research program on gastroesophageal reflux diseaseKeywords: gastroesophageal reflux disease , patient education , proton pump inhibitors Abstract: Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition affecting 10-20% of the population in Western countries. Aim of the study: The disease impairs the quality of life and generates social costs associated with treatment and absenteeism at work. The purpose of the education research program was to assess the patients’ knowledge of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Material and methods: In the years 2009-2011, 348 physicians (educators) participated in the program, and the research involved 37 567 patients. The study consisted in performing a test of knowledge by means of a questionnaire, then conducting an educational discussion. Results: It was found that the patients’ level of knowledge about the disease is improving, but is still insufficient. Conclusions: The main source of information are health professionals, who should strive to continue the improvements in the field of education
