Retrato do analfabetismo: algumas considera es sobre a educa o no Brasil = The portrayal of illiteracy: some considerations on education in Brazil

Este estudo tem por objetivo tecer algumas considera es sobre o quadro do analfabetismo e do iletrismo no Brasil. Para esta pesquisa, utilizamos três procedimentos metodológicos: revis o conceitual da literatura, delineamento da historicidade do analfabetismo no Brasil e levantamento de dados estatísticos. Quanto à revis o da literatura, apresentamos os termos analfabetismo e iletrismo, bem como apontamos a leituriza o e o letramento, como uma das alternativas para minimizar o analfabetismo, sem termos, neste momento, a pretens o de elaborar uma proposta para superar o problema. Desta forma, por meio do resgate histórico e do conjunto de dados estatísticos, mostramos a situa o de atraso “histórico” na educa o no que concerne aoanalfabetismo renitente, principalmente nos países em desenvolvimento como o nosso. The portrayal of illiteracy: some considerations on education in Brazil. The aim of this study is to make some considerations on the present Brazilian situation regarding literacy and illiteracy. Three different methodological procedures were used: a conceptual revision of the literature; the historical process of illiteracy in Brazil and statistical data on the subject. In relation to the bibliographical studies, the terms literacy, illiteracy, reading and decoding oftexts are presented coupled to writing skills. There is no intention of building a new proposal to overcome the problem of illiteracy. Therefore the historical background of illiteracy and statistical data show the historical situation of a diehard educational condition as actually occurs in developing countries, Brazil included.
