Las controversias sobre la secularización de parroquias en Filipinas, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX

This paper is concerned with the debate on the secularizacion of parishes in the Philippines during the second half of the 19th century, as analyzed from the perspective of the Archipelago. The essay analyzes both the arguments put forth in the debate and the facts that determined the revival of a problem inherited from the 18th century, the period in which the ultimate roots and the explanation for such disputes have to be sought. Written on the basis of one of the numerous libels published at the time, the essay forms part of the larger project whose aim is to study the history of the parishes in the Archipelago from the second half of the 18th century to the end of the Spanish rule. Este trabajo aborda el debate sobre la secularización de parroquias en Filipinas en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, desde la perspectiva del propio archipiélago. En él se analizan tanto los argumentos esgrimidos como los hechos concretos que condicionaron el resurgir de un problema heredado del siglo XVIII, contexto en que dichas disputas alcanzan su plena explicación. Elaborado a partir de uno de los muchos alegatos publicados en estos a os, este estudio forma parte de un proyecto más amplio cuyo objeto es estudiar la historia de las parroquias del archipiélago desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y hasta el fin del dominio espa ol.
