Progress of Research on Impacts and Feedback of Air Pollution on Climate Change
|
Abstract:
Climate change and air pollution are important environmental issues that human have to face. The research on impacts of air pollution on climate change and the feedback has an important theoretical value and can provide technical support for policy makers. This paper has summarized the research results of the ongoing projects, which were funded by The National Environmental Protection Public Welfare Industry Targeted Research Fund, named"Research on Impacts and Feedback of Air Pollution on Climate Change". The research groups are made up of experts from Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University of Technology, and Climate Center of Beijing Meteorological Bureau. Some significant results have been achieved in present state, such as the current situation and future trends of pollutants and greenhouse gases emission, air quality modeling and its application, regional climate simulation and its application, future scenarios of climate change and its effect on air pollution, as well as the progress of research on pollutants prevention and control measures of tackling climate change. The main initial results include the establishment of a base year database of typical air pollutants and major greenhouse gases, assessment of real status and future trend of air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in different regions and industries in China, simulation of climate status for nearly ten years using regional climate model (RegCM) and sensitivity experiments in typical area, analysis of correlation between air pollution index (API) and meteorological elements in typical area (three urban agglomerations: Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta), the research of impact mechanism of meteorological factors on air pollution, the comparation study of pollution prevention and control measures as well as policy measures to tackle climate change and the effects in typical developed countries or organizations and typical developing countries. The future research should be strengthened in aspects including the compile of emission inventory of different pollution sources, the foundation of three-dimensional observation network, the development of model tools, the study for radiative forcing of typical air pollutants, in particular black carbon and sulphate aerosol, the research on characteristics of climate change in typical area under different emission scenarios, the air pollution control measures under the background of climate change.
