ON RESOURCES EXPLOITATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE THREE GORGES RESERVOIR AREA

Lying on the lower section of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River,the Three Gorges Reservoir Area consists of submerged portions and resettlement related counties and cities.The area has been one of the econo mically undeveloped poverty stricken areas in China.During the 1990s,along with the construction of the Three Gorges Project,the pace of both resources exploit ation and economic development has been quickened.Consequently,numerous social,e conomic and environmental problems associated with reservoir area development we re resulted.The paper offers suggestions on future perspectives of the Three Gor ges Reservoir Area,referring to particular sustainable development.
