EVALUATION OF TAXONOMIC CRITERIA IN THE GENUS PYTHIUM AND ITS CHINESE SPECIES

The genus Pythium is a comparatively large genus in Oomycetes. Its significance in theoretical and practical aspects can not be ignored. Since 1940s, we have investigated this group of fungi in morphology, taxonomy, pathology, ecology, physiology and chemistry. The history of 'Pythiumology' is reviewed. The present taxonomic criteria and systematics are evaluated. And, a detailled key to the species reported in China is given.
